This section will be devoted to Scriptural words and their meaning. We will not only establish the etymological roots of these words, but we will reveal how many English words are actually Hebrew words. Everything and anything you might want to know about the Hebrew language will be discussed and presented in this section.E-mail us if you want to know what a particular word is and we will be happy to post it here for all to read. If you are interested in it, maybe many others are, too.
JAREDOne of the children of Mahal'alel, we assume he had more than one, was named Jared. This word in Hebrew comes from the verbal root yarad, and means to descend or as it is most commmonly translated 'to go down.' In it's verbal root it means 'he came/went down'. This word is also commonly associated with death and mortality, as it is used to express going down to sheol.
B'reshiyt 37:25
Yechezk'el 26:20
Yesha'yahu 14:15 It is also sometimes used to express leaving the land of Israel as opposed to going 'up' ('aliyah) to the land.
D'varim 10:22
Z'kharyah 14:17 It may not be a coincidence that Mahal'alel, the 5th son, means the blessed or praised of God, and that Jared, the 6th son, means to go or come down and is associated with death. If my memory serves me correctly, it seems that Yochanan the apostle reveals to us someone who came down in the likeness of men to die for us. Hmmmm.
Shalom Alecheim!
